Wenfei Fan is a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), a Member of the Academia Europaea (MAE), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE), and a Fellow of the ACM. Academician Fan is an internationally renowned database expert. In 2018, he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society, the world’s most influential and most rigorous science academy. He is the second FRS from mainland China and the only Chinese among more than 30 fellows in the field of computer science. He is also one of the two scholars who have collected the major awards from all four leading international database theory and systems conferences in the history of database research.
Academician Fan has made fundamental contributions to both foundations and practice of database, recognized by scholars around the world. As a pioneer in the field of data science, he initiated a number of new research directions of big data and proposed the world’s leading technology solutions with his extraordinary talents. He is the recipient of 18 international awards, including the Roger Needham Award 2008 (one of the UK’s highest accolades in computer science) and the Royal Society Wolfson Fellowship 2018 (UK), for his brilliant contribution in laying the foundations of big data computational complexity, reshaping the field of data quality research, and pioneering the research of boundedness theories on semi-Structured Data.
